About the Artwork
“Botan” means peony in Japanese. The flower, associated with bravery, appears across the deck and supports the botanical wordplay woven into its imagery. Addi Miyako painted the deck in her grandmother’s dining room, drawing on memories connected to Botan Rice Candy and on Japanese children’s stories that influence the Minor Arcana.
